Why & When do people make Tang Yuan?
Tang Yuan (湯圓) is a homophone of and frequent metaphor for a family reunion (團圓), and so for many Chinese families worldwide Tang Yuan is usually eaten together with the family. The round shape of the balls and the bowls in which they are served, come to symbolize family togetherness.
