Retirement and Estate Planning for U.S. Persons Residing Abroad
Summary of Presentation
U.S. persons working and living outside the U.S. share certain characteristics. They have lived in different countries and they own assets in two or more jurisdictions. Some of the assets are held in their own names, while other assets are owned via nominee arrangements or in entities. Their families may comprise of U.S. persons and non-U.S. persons. They read about the increasingly complicated and mandatory U.S. tax and information filings required of them, and they are frequently bombarded by many retirement and financial planning products that claim to be tax efficient. How should these U.S. persons plan for their retirement? Why is it important to create and review short, medium and long term goals? When should they use insurance products? What should they consider when they plan their estates to benefit their loved ones? Is gifting the best way to transfer assets? How serious are the implications of partial or non-compliance with U.S. tax reporting and information filing obligations?
